Local SEO for Australian service businesses

How Google picks the three businesses it shows
Google says local results come down to three things: relevance, distance and prominence.
Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. A profile with one vague category and no services listed can't match much.
Distance is how far you are from the person searching. You can't move, which is why the other two matter so much, and why a single office rarely ranks across a whole city on its own.
Prominence is how well known you are. Google names review count and score here, along with links, articles and directories that mention you.
Nothing on that list is a secret or a trick. It's just work most businesses never get around to.
Signs local SEO is your problem
- You rank in the suburb you’re based in and nowhere else you actually work.
- Your profile shows one category, no services and three photos from 2019.
- Competitors with worse work have four times your reviews.
- Your phone number or business name is different on Yellow Pages, Hipages and Apple Maps.
- You have one “Services” page covering six services.
- You’ve never seen where you rank on the map from the other side of your service area.
- Your profile gets views but almost no calls or direction requests.

How we measure it
Suburbs and service areas
Businesses often ask for a page per suburb, twenty or thirty at a time. We don't do that.
Near-identical pages with the suburb name swapped are doorway pages, and Google's spam policies cover them directly. They also read badly, which is the bigger problem.
What works is fewer pages with something real in them: the jobs you actually do in that area, the housing stock, the council rules, response times, named projects. We build area pages where you have that material, usually starting with three or four, and add more as the work gives us something to write about.
How local SEO and AI SEO fit together
They share most of their foundations. A complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings and real reviews decide whether Google shows you on the map and whether ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity name you when someone asks for a recommendation.
Local SEO is the core service. AI SEO is an add-on for businesses that also want to be tracked and worked on across those engines: forty questions asked every month across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, and outreach to the sources those engines cite. It's $390 a month on top of Local and $590 on top of Growth.
Start with local SEO. Add AI SEO when the foundations are right.
Pricing
Free local visibility check
Search Audit, $790
Local, $990 a month
Growth, $1,790 a month
AI SEO add-on, $390 a month on Local or $590 on Growth
What's included
Both plans include this work every month. Growth adds more pages, wider outreach and competitor tracking.
- Google Business Profile and listings. Your profile kept complete and current, with one name, address and phone number across Bing, Apple and the directories for your trade.
- Reviews. A request after every job and a reply to every review.
- Pages planned around real searches. Service and area pages built around what customers actually search for.
- Local links and mentions. Outreach to suppliers, industry bodies, local organisations and the "best of" lists already ranking in your category. Earned, never bought.
Who this is for
Trades and home services: plumbers, electricians, air-conditioning, roofing, cleaning, landscaping. Clinics: dental, physio, vet and allied health. Professional services: accountants, lawyers, mortgage brokers, real estate agents.
It's a poor fit if you have no website and no Google Business Profile yet, or if you need leads this week. Local SEO compounds over months. If you need the phone ringing on Monday, spend the money on Google Ads instead and come back when you want something that keeps working after you stop paying.
Why ScaleCurrent
We run our own online stores across Shopify, eBay and Australian marketplaces, so we judge this work by leads and revenue rather than by a ranking screenshot. Each plan states the hours behind it. Every report shows the map, before and after, so you can check the work yourself.
This service launched in 2026 and we won't show you case studies we don't have. The first will go on this site once clients finish their first 90 days.
Questions
How long does local SEO take?
Profile and listing fixes often show within a few weeks. Moving up the map across a whole service area usually takes three to six months, longer in crowded categories like dental and legal. Anyone promising faster is guessing.
Do I need a shopfront to rank?
No. A service-area business can rank without showing a public address, as long as the profile is verified and the service area is set properly. Google hides the address; it still knows where you are.
How many suburbs can I realistically rank in?
It depends on how far you are from them and how many competitors sit in between. Distance is one of Google’s three factors and you can’t change it. Expect strong results close to your base and gradual progress further out, rather than a whole city at once.
What does local SEO cost?
The check is free, the audit is $790, and plans are $990 or $1,790 a month excluding GST. The audit is credited against your first month if you continue.
Do Google Business Profile posts help?
They help a little, and they help more with customers than with rankings. They’re part of the monthly work, not the reason it works.
Can I do this myself?
Most of it, yes. The profile rebuild and the review system are a weekend of work and a habit after that. People hire us for the parts that need doing every month and the parts that need judgement: which listings matter, which links are worth chasing, and which pages to write.
Do you work outside Sydney?
Yes. We’re based in Sydney and take clients across Australia. Everything is delivered remotely.
Is AI SEO included?
No, it’s an add-on: $390 a month on top of Local, $590 on top of Growth. Local SEO already covers Google’s map and rankings, including Google’s AI answers, which run on the same systems. The add-on covers ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot tracking and the outreach behind it.
